This trip was well oversubscribed, and for good reason. This was one of the most interesting, illuminating and exciting visits we have done for a long while. The Old Fire Engine station in Saxmundham is now transformed into Laurence's new studio space with drawing rooms, wax rooms, clay rooms and painting rooms, all spacious and filled to the brim with work in progress, mirrors and plants. The work on six large figures, destined for the six niches in the hall of Thomas Wyatt interior for Heveningham Hall, was a particular topic of interest in the talk that our sculptor delivered. One can be seen here with his back to you!
Halesworth before discovering Laurence's vast foundary building on an industrial estate on the outskirts of town. The spectacle of a dozen or so sculpture moulds being filled with molten bronze by his assistants was almost eclipsed by the towering 'Beast of the East' plaster figure at the rear of the building, nearly 30 feet high and destined to be cast in bronze for installation on a nearby estate overloooking a lake.
Another ongoing and very intelligently and sensitively researched project is a monument to celebrate the mining history of Doncaster. A maquette for this intriguing and interactive project was the subject of more talk and discussion. Our sincere thanks to Laurence for all th etime and trouble he took to show us something of the mind and work of a modern bronze-master.
