Cans, sticks, pipes, food, dust and traps
“Since leaving art school, my practice has been governed by a contradictory cycle of socio-political concern and graphic abstraction – a kind of schizophrenic restlessness between objectiveness and subjectiveness. Despite this seemingly disparate approach, the objects that I deploy in my artwork remain constant and have appeared repeatedly over the years, each time in a new guise, sometimes as metaphor and sometimes as themselves. The cans, sticks, pipes, food, dust, and traps that I list in the title of this talk represent chapters or sub-headings within a longer narrative. It is not a comprehensive catalogue of objects/subjects/things, but best represents those featuring most prominently, like the most reliable actors in a repertory theatre group. I will tell the story of these things, what they mean to me and why they appear in my art”.
